Saturday Sept. 22 began as a nearly perfect day for shooting, temperature in the mid 60's slightly overcast. 23 shooters assembled for the 2018 edition of the Pa. State GSV match at Reade Range, Allemans, Pa.
This years match would turn out to be one to remember for several different reasons. During set up of the electronic targets it was discovered that no signal was being received from the targets themselves. After troubleshooting it was discovered that a voltage convertor had failed due to excessive rainfall. At approximately 10:00 am the decision was made to switch over to paper targets. Fortunately at Reade Range there is enough room that the shooters could move over 10 spots and post targets. Due to the overwhelming cooperation and perseverance of all involved the range went hot at 10:30 AM, almost 2 1/2 hrs from the original scheduled start time. Every effort was made to save even the smallest increment of time and to the amazement of all involved the final shot was fired at 5:10 PM. When the scores were compiled Tom Morley of Washington, Pa. stood as the 2018 GSV State champion firing an aggregate score of 860-17, making him a 2 time gold medal winner of this match. Tom was also high score in the individual rifle categories with a 287-7 in the M1 match, 291-4 in the Springfield and 282-6 in the Vintage match. Richard Bodine of neighboring Maryland was second high agg. score with an 854-18, Tom Hemphill Clarksburg, Pa. was the silver medal winner with an 838-15 and Josh Stemerick of Saltsburg, Pa. won bronze with an 822-8. Not to be distracted by the events beginning the match 40 medals were distributed among the 23 shooters which is believed to be a new high. Special thanks to Ed Lambert for calling the line and to Wendy Hemphill for having the scores completed shortly after the end of the match. Thank you also to the 23 shooters for the "never say die" attitude that makes this match possible. See you all again next year! Last edited by TomH; 10-02-2018 at 12:30 PM. |
