I have been recently given a box of 50 steel cased ammo, my question, is it collectable and is it corrosive or just good blasting ammo? Thank you in advance for any replies. Jim

Need more info that this. What is the headstamp and date?
If it's WWII and in original box in great condition someone may pay a few extra bucks for a display. Other than that it's just .45 ammo which may or not be corrosive... depends on mfg. and year. Pics of the ammo, headstamp and box would help.

Was given some mid-wartime steel-cased 45 ammo...probably 1943 or so, and it was terribly corrosive. Thought I did a thorough job the first time I cleaned and oiled it, but good thing I looked at the pistol in the safe after a week. Breech face & inside of bore looked like a cheese doodle, with light orange surface rust. Scrubbed it again with boiling hot soapy water and re-oiled it. That did the trick, with no permanent damage . Ammo was reliable and accurate and functioned just fine, just clean it well. (And check on it after a week).

I would recommend just keeping it to go with a GI .45. I was given 1500 rounds stored poorly. Oxidation on casings starting. Boxes poor. A hint of rust here and there. I’ve been running it thru my F/A Thompson. It’s corrosive as hell. When I get done I hit it with the old GI bore cleaner and then take the wood off and throw the whole thing in a pan of automatic transmission fluid.
