The Gen I Shotmarker had a listening window of something like 20 ms. Adjacent incoming rounds would and still do trip the microphone array on adjacent targets and during that window the target cannot “see” any more incoming rounds. The Gen II is cut down to like 5ms. There are other algorithm changes and sensor hub changes but I am not exactly sure what it all is. This is the Achilles heel of the open mic system. Firing odd/even effectively spaces targets out so as to minimize interrupting adjacent targets if two bullets come in within the listening window (the second bullet will not be seen and thus scored).

The further away from the target the shot originates (200 vs 300 vs 600) the less energy the bullet has and the less impact the pressure wave has on tripping adjacent target microphones.
