Speer 75 grain TMJ Long Range Accuracy?

Has anyone tried the Speer 75 grain TMJ for accuracy


I have seen only one test on youtube and it was just "ok" for practice but that was one guy with one video.

I think this is Speer's 75gr practice version of their 75gr Gold Dot.


I know this is plated vs jacketed and I wonder if the copper fouling would be worse then jackets.


I use hornady 75's for matches but the Speers were a little cheaper.

I have not tried them; however, are they cheaper than 20 cents a bullet? Red River Reloafing has the Hornady 75’s for $21 per hundred and even better pricing for bulk purchasing. You have tried them, or are you just questioning my use of "Long"

Not those specifically and sort of............

FWIW........I was shooting the BHA 75 Hornady load out to 600yds with great accuracy.
But in trying to shoot those out to 1000, they didn't.
I figure that somewhere around 7-800 they fell apart.

YMMV and the Speers are a different bullet...........but I doubt they are better (BC-wise) than the Hornadys.

Just my 2% internet advice.

(If you want to hit 1000yds......... the Sierra 77's or 80's)

Taking nothing from anyone on long range success or choice of bullets, my experience is 77's max out at 800 yds and are infinitely less wonderful at 1000 yds . 80 gr bullets are optimum for 800 and 1000 yds. The 75 gr bullets did as well at 800 as the 77 grain or I can't steady enough to tell the difference. I can' remember anyone making Speer bullets do well at 600 yds but maybe someone can comment they have.

If one had a 24 inch barrel AR upper, perhaps 77's can rock at 1000 yds...if so, pls post your success.

Fair enough........ I should have explained, I'm shooting at around 5300ft+ in elevation.
So in a 20" the 77SMK will do 1000yds, they are more "floating" than "going" but they make it.
The 77 TMK and of course 80's are much better.

And the OP is in Colorado as well...........as am I.
And you're at around 30ft?

PS BTW I shot at Quantico once for a week, nice range.

Oh and PSS....... The Hornadys I shot were the simple HPBT, not the ELD's or something.........

5 shot group .910" (4 hole cloverleaf of .410 with one dang flyer!)

5 rounds same load same day with Hornady 75's & Winchester primers gave me .610"
Call me nuts but the hornady 75's work better for me with Winchester primers.

For the price they are fine for my purposes. I would have been happy with 2moa

Did not chrono.

I usually load Varget but rising prices have pushed me to use up some 4895.

As I've said, I haven't shot those.........and don't know the difference between them and the Hornady 75's.............
But I did have good results with the Hornadys out to 600.......
So if you are running out to 400......... that should be great!
