Man, I can't even begin to imagine the noise and hearing damage. Simply off of any reasonable scale. Really odd that they didn't have ANY hearing protection at all. It's not like an infantry engagement that was fluid. These guys were all facing each other and just shooting as fast as they could. Not moving anywhere. Visual/hand signals would have worked fine with some ear plugs or ear muffs.

with due regard to the heroics of Taffy 3, the reality is the Japanese lost the battle.
like Mikawa at Savo Island, Kurita lacked the true Bushido spirit to press home the attack. in both cases, destruction of the landing forces was in the grasp of the Japanese. in a contest of intestinal fortitude the Japanese came in second.
